Public Service Announcement – Don’t live near freeways

When you live near a freeway, you are exposed to far more vehicle exhaust than normal. In particular, you are exposed to “dangerous ultrafine particles” emitted by diesel engines:

Freeways: Twelve lanes of toxic pollution

Kleinman, codirector of UC Irvine’s Air Pollution Health Effects Laboratory, discovered that ultrafine-particle levels within 50 yards of a freeway can be as much as 10 times normal. His studies show that exposure to these particles worsens such lung ailments as asthma and accelerates the development of atherosclerosis.

Delfino, epidemiology associate professor, oversees a $3 million National Institutes of Health effort tracking elderly individuals with heart disease to see how daily exposure to traffic-related ultrafine particles affects their condition. His research team has linked these pollutants to significant increases in cardiovascular inflammation, blood-clotting platelets and blood pressure, especially after physical activity.

So if you have a choice in where you live, you would not choose to live next door to a freeway, especially if there is a lot ot truck traffic on it. If you do live near a freeway, you might be inclined to keep your windows closed and use air filtration inside your home. See How Air Purifiers Work and Buying an Air Purifier for details.
